For a wine company to become successful and well-reputed in its country, it should have passionate winemakers as founders. That’s exactly why Luddite is one of the well-loved South African wine company today. It was founded in the 1990s by Niels and Penny Verburg. Both of them were friends even before they attended college together. After they finished college, they moved to Europe, which was when Niels travelled to different countries and picked up the tricks of the trade.
When they moved back to South Africa in the 1990s, they decided to set up their own label by buying a small piece of land in the Bot River region in 1999. Located towards the east of Houw Hoek Mountains, this estate now covers an area of 16 hectares, out of which 8.5 hectares are under vine.

Cape South Coast (12.8%)
Is Alice Verburg having a growing influence on the style of the Luddite whites? It would seemso. This a fresh, low-intervention, partially skin fermented cuvée of Chenin Blanc with 36% Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, combining Bot River and Elgin grapes. Complex, layered andnutty, with a salty tang and a hint of stone fruit from partial botrytis. 2021-24

The bottle sparks conversation just by having a beer cap type closure. Thereafter a whiff of fruit and interesting flavours, very slight oak on the palate, a party in my mouth, with a slight acidic finish.
Stunning well balanced silky smooth wine. Full flavoured medium bodied
2019 Vintage. Deep golden yellow in colour. Simply sublime. Smells of peach and vanilla....Tastes of butter, pear and mineral. Wonderfully balanced. Perfect viscosity.
Quiet intersting blending of sauvignon blanc, fume blanc, vioniger and chenin blanc. A nose of citrus, melon and sesame oil with a little bit of smoky aroma. Good concentration with delious palate.
Chenin, Viognier and fume Blanc (Sauvignon blanc). Some mineral, pineapple, buttery and grapefruit wine. Lots of oak. Nice acidity. Perfect to meal both fish and charcuterie!
"So great to be able to receive a regular delivery of good wine rather than the usual 12 bottle case sold by most 'wine clubs' "
