Tasting Note

Appearance: The Montepulciano pours a deep ruby red with hints of violet at the edges, indicating its youthful vibrancy and rich color concentration.

Nose: On the nose, this wine offers an enticing bouquet of ripe dark fruits such as black cherries, plums, and blackberries. These are complemented by subtle notes of leather, tobacco, and a touch of spice, like black pepper and cloves. A faint hint of earthy undertones and dried herbs rounds out the aromatic profile.

Palate: The first sip reveals a medium to full-bodied wine with a robust flavor profile. The dark fruit flavors carry through, joined by layers of red currants and a touch of licorice. The tannins are smooth yet present, providing structure and a pleasing grip. Balanced acidity gives the wine a refreshing lift, ensuring it is not overly heavy on the palate. The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of dark fruit and a hint of mocha.

Food Pairing: Montepulciano is a versatile wine that pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes. Here are some recommendations:

  • Pasta Dishes: Enjoy with hearty pasta dishes such as spaghetti Bolognese, lasagna, or pasta all'amatriciana. The wine's acidity and tannins complement the richness of the tomato-based sauces and the savory meats.
  • Grilled Meats: Pair with grilled lamb chops, beef steaks, or sausages. The wine's bold flavors and tannic structure stand up well to the robust flavors of grilled and roasted meats.
  • Pizza: A classic pairing with traditional Italian pizza, especially those with rich toppings like pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms.
  • Cheeses: A variety of aged cheeses, such as Parmigiano-Reggiano, Pecorino, and aged cheddar, can enhance the wine's complexity and balance its fruitiness.
  • Mediterranean Dishes: The wine pairs well with Mediterranean cuisine, including roasted vegetables, stuffed peppers, and eggplant parmesan.

Serving Suggestions: Serve the Montepulciano at around 16-18°C (60-65°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 30 minutes before serving can help open up the wine and enhance its flavors.

Definitely recommend giving it a try!

I recently tried the Matti Montepulciano, and I have to say, it’s a fantastic wine that really delivers. Here’s what I thought....
This wine has a beautiful deep ruby red color with some cool purple highlights. Looks rich and inviting right from the pour.

The aroma hits you with loads of ripe dark fruits like black cherries, plums, and blackberries. There’s also a nice hint of flowers and a bit of black pepper spice. After a bit, you start to notice
more complex scents like leather, tobacco, and a touch of vanilla.

Taste-wise, this Montepulciano is full-bodied and flavourful. You get those dark fruits again – cherries and plums – along with some red currants and a hint of licorice.

The tannins are smooth, giving it a nice, velvety feel. It’s got a good balance of acidity, so it’s refreshing without being too heavy. The finish is long and leaves you with notes of dark chocolate and a bit of oak.

The Matti Montepulciano is a great choice if you’re looking for a rich, flavorful wine that goes well with a variety of foods. It’s got a nice balance and complexity that makes it enjoyable on its own or with a meal. Definitely recommend giving it a try!

"So great to be able to receive a regular delivery of good wine rather than the usual 12 bottle case sold by most 'wine clubs' "

Great wine at a great time, everytime
